Finding Antiques and Collectables in Sydney CBD
Sydney's CBD is a web of streets and alleys that grew with the arrival of the earliest settlers. As Sydney grew so did our shopping districts, our arcades, street frontage and major shopping centres. Like any sophisticated centre, Sydney offers a big spread of products and services, but the focus of this is finding the best antiques in and round the Sydney metro area.
Hidden in the heart of Sydney are numerous treasure troves where you'll find the most wondrous antiques and memorabilia. From The Rocks, to the Strand Arcade, QVB and the various sidestreets, Sydney and surrounds offers a huge range of jewellery, object d'art, collectables and rare finds that are certain to suit all searchers.
One of the oldest areas of Sydney is The Rocks, literally formed with the coming of the 1st fleet in 1788 where our settlers assembled the 1st open air gaol, transforming into a prospering port community. With such an exciting past, this forms the backdrop for numerous estabished antique stores, including Bottom of the Harbor and Margo Richards where you can source maritime collectibles and a wide range of vintage presents.
Heading away from the shores of Circular Quay into the CBD you come across the renowned Strand Arcade. Constructed in 1892, the Strand Arcade is the only one still in its original form of the 5 arcades that were built during the mid-to-late 19th Century. Spread over three stories, connecting Pitt and George Streets, this well established building is home to many shops offering gifts and collectables. On the Ground floor, sitting right in the centre, is one of the oldest antique dealers in the arcade, Victoria & Albert Antiques whose extensive display spans from antiques through vintage and retro. Also neighbouring are Tresors and SVW Fredman. In but a little distance you can procure some of Sydney's most sort after jewellery, offering watches, clocks, albert chains, fobs, and more spanning the 18 th 19 th and 20th Centuries.
A close by building, Queen Victoria Building was opened in 1898. Originally the Sydney markets it was made as a tribute to Queen Victoria and is now simply referred to as the QVB. If searching for modern jewellery, this is home to a few of Sydney's leading designers and jewellers including Georg Jensen, Bunda boutique and many more. QVB is also home to Martin & Stein and Kalmar Antiques, both famous for their delightful jewellery.
