Learn To Sell Your Jewelry At Art Fairs

Making as well as selling your own individual art jewelry can become a compelling full or part time career for anyone aspiring to become an art jeweler. You may have started already by making a few pieces of art jewelry for a friend or family member. After getting a few compliments from them, maybe they asked you to make some more pieces. Fabulous! Wow, now you've just started taking your very first commissions. Art fairs, when researched first and chosen properly, can be a great way of starting to get your work out there for sale. Art fairs or street art fairs offer the opportunity for not only immediate gratification (if your work sells), but they provide a real life chance to interact with potential customers. You can talk to them about their jewelry preferences and get invaluable feedback and your first real market research about your jewelry line. You can not only get feedback on the individual price points for pieces, you get to let potential customers try on your work so you can double check your sizing. You'll also learn how to display your work best. Working out the best displays for your work can be challenging but it can also be exciting and even fun.

Having now said that, I should again emphasize that doing some research first will significantly help you in this area.  Why? Doing your homework and research first can prevent you from losing money instead of making it. You just need to lose money right out of the box. Far too many students of mine gave up doing art fairs when the first one didn't go well. Again, they failed most of the time because they didn't do their necessary research. The bad part to that was that their confidence was hurt when their lack of success had more to due with the poor fair than their work itself.

Experiencing a bad fair may have little to nothing to do with the quality of your work. Finding the best quality fairs in your own locality can prevent that from happening to you. Begin by making a short list of your preferred fairs. No matter how excited you get about doing art fairs, make sure you walk each fair on your list before signing up to do any of them. Be sure to talk to as many jewelry vendors as you can to get their feedback on how the fair does for them. Make an effort to speak with as many vendors for your chosen show as you can. You're doing this to allow yourself to get a good feel for the fair.

Another important thing to do is make sure you check out the prices of the jewelry pieces at the fair to see if your own prices will be a good fit. Make sure to find out whether the fair is a juried one or not. If it's not juried (reviewed and approved by an arts committee), you might be taking a real chance entering the fair since you won't necessarily know what quality standards the fair has. You might end up having your own booth positioned next to another vendor selling low quality items. That's the reason why you need to walk the fair first. So, also be sure to find out about the traffic your chosen show/s generate as well as determining that the quality of the show in general meets your standards.

There are other concerns when thinking about art fair participation, too. You're going to need to know how to estimate your inventory before doing any art fairs. Are you confident about how you've developed your own jewelry line? Do you know which pieces in your jewelry line will sell best? Can you easily pick out your jewelry pieces that will become your bestsellers? Can you pick out the "bread and butter" pieces in your jewelry line?

Finally, you need to assess your costs to realize your break even point. How much money will you need to have to create your inventory? How long will it take you to make your inventory? How much will it cost for both booth and tent fees? How much is it going to cost for the display items and decor of your booth? Do you know what the best way is to lay out your booth for traffic flow?

While there's a lot to learn before you decide to do art fairs, it's also a very exciting and viable adventure. There's just nothing like getting that feedback on your creative work. There's nothing like the thrill of standing in your own crowded booth.
