Atlanta For Business And Leisure
Atlanta’s relative youth, in fact, explains a lot about its current identity. When that stake was planted in 1837 –a time when places like Savannah and Charleston were already well established—Atlanta was still largely forestland, the site of a small Creek settlement called Standing Peachtree. Then, of course, while the city is still less than 30 years old, William Tecumseh Sherman got a little careless with fire and burned 70 percent of it to the ground. Rising from its own ashes, Atlanta sprang back hard, largely by repositioning as a haven for business. Economic success, apparently, is the best revenge.
And Atlanta feels so much like a business town. People could sense the mercantile energy in most part of the city, but the locust of Atlanta the Modern Business Center is definitely downtown. Here is where the Peachtree Center stands, a gigantic (and still growing) office-hotel-retail complex. Designed by Atlantan John Portman, the inventor of the atrium lobby concept, the complex is grand and glittery, teeming with blue suits and name-tagged conventioneers.
Indeed, business is so much the business of Atlanta that even some of its major tourist attractions have a decidedly commercial bent. Meanwhile, the most extravagant attraction in town –underground Atlanta—is basically a shopping mall, though a shopping center with difference. It’s located right in the historical center of town, near the Zero Milepost that marks the site of the original railroad terminal. Once a busy commercial district, the area went into decline (literally, in a sense) during the 1920s, when concrete viaducts were constructed above it to channel vehicular traffic over the railroad tracks. The shops were abandoned or turned into storage spaces.
Today, after a 142-million-dollar revitalization, these same spaces house colorful little boutiques and nightclubs. Modern offices that uses the hi-tech all-in-one printer like Epson WorkForce840 can also be found anywhere around. Two or three blocks away stands skyscrappers of business centers and ultra-modern hotels with state-of-the-art treadmill like ProForm Trailrunner 4.0 (well the heater equipments must be more than just Kozy World KWN321).
It must be good if people stroll down the Lower Alabama Street, past faux-antique pushcarts selling jewelry, blown-glass ornaments, and flowery scarves. Here the air is fully smelled of popcorn and lavender sachet, while light streamed into the glass doors leading back up to the street level. The trim little turn-of-the-century shops look as if they should be selling candle wax and horse harnesses, but at the moment you take yourself inside the stores, you will see how the wares are of a different nature–Victoria’s Secret lingerie, Gap T-Shirts, and jelly beans in flavors like coconut and lime.

Coconut $32.38 An important rumination on youth in modern-day South Africa, this haunting debut novel tells the story of two extraordinary young women who have grown up black in white suburbs and must now struggle to find their identities. Meanwhile, the hip and sassy Fiks is an ambitious go-getter desperate to leave her vicious past behind for the glossy sophistication of city life, but finds Johannesburg to be more complicated and unforgiving than she expected.
